Installing under MacOSX

EMBOSS works on MacOSX. The configuration and compilation steps for the core system are the same as for other platforms.

The X11 supplied by Apple for Panther (10.3) works with EMBOSS. You must, however, install the SDK option. The Apple beta3 X11 for 10.1 & 10.2 does not work with EMBOSS (beta1 and beta2 do work). It is not known whether later X11s from Apple work on these platforms. We therefore recommend that, for 10.1 and 10.2, you install XFree86. For this, download all the tgz files from (e.g):

ftp://ftp.xfree86.org

and then execute the shell script (sh Xinstall.sh). Do not uncompress the tgz files. You may also need to download GNU 'make' and GNU 'm4'.
